Wayne Rooney has delivered a stinging rebuke to Manchester United boss Rúben Amorim, insisting the under-pressure manager must start producing results or face the sack.
Speaking in the aftermath of United’s 1-1 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage, Rooney said there was no justification for the team’s sluggish start to the Premier League campaign, particularly after a summer transfer spend exceeding £200 million.
“There are no excuses now,” Rooney declared. “United have invested heavily, they’ve brought in big players, and the expectation is to win games.
"At a club like this, you don’t get time to bed in forever. Amorim needs to find solutions quickly, because the performances haven’t been good enough.”
United currently sit without a win in the league this season, having drawn two and lost one of their opening fixtures.
While fans have praised the attacking intent in patches, defensive lapses and missed opportunities have raised concerns that Amorim’s system is not delivering the required results.
Rooney, who won every major domestic honour during his time at Old Trafford, pointed to a lack of structure in midfield and recurring defensive frailties as key issues.
“The balance isn’t there,” he said on the Wayne Rooney Show. “They look vulnerable at the back, and the midfield doesn’t control games. That has to change. If you can’t dominate against teams like Fulham, then questions will be asked.”
The criticism comes as pressure builds on Amorim just weeks into his reign. Although new signings Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Patrick Dorgu have shown glimpses of promise, United’s inability to convert performances into wins has already sparked frustration among supporters.
For Rooney, who has himself been linked with future managerial ambitions, the message was blunt: results must improve immediately.
“At Manchester United, the standards are clear. You win, you compete, and you fight for titles. Anything less won’t be accepted,” he said.
As United prepare for their next league fixture, the spotlight will only intensify on Amorim. Another setback could see criticism escalate further — and questions grow louder about whether the Portuguese coach can weather the storm.
