Manchester United back to make 'two big signings' before the January transfer deadline and has been urged to target Alexander Isak by Teddy Sheringham.
United’s inconsistency was on full display again as
Ruben Amorim’s side suffered a 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Despite a spirited draw against Premier League leaders Liverpool earlier this month and a dramatic FA Cup win over Arsenal with ten men, United have struggled to build momentum.
A narrow escape against bottom-placed Southampton was followed by another lackluster performance against Brighton, leaving
United 13th in the table, closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League spots.
Amorim had been expected to hold off on major squad changes until the summer, but United's poor form might prompt action in the January transfer market.
Sheringham, a former United striker, believes the club could make a statement with two significant signings and has identified Isak as an ideal target.
Isak, currently a Newcastle striker, has also been linked to Arsenal.
However, Newcastle reportedly value the 24-year-old at over £100m, making a deal challenging.
Speaking to BoyleSports, Sheringham explained: "I wouldn’t be surprised to see two big January signings at Manchester United.
"The club needs to rebuild, but it’s hard to get top players in the January window.
"This is the time to work in the background and prepare for summer signings. Still, I’d love to see big names arrive this month, though it’s tough."
Sheringham emphasized United’s need for an overall squad upgrade, adding: "United used to break the bank for top players.
"That’s not happening now, and the gap is evident. They need a rebuild, and signing players like Alexander Isak could help turn things around."
On Isak, who has netted 15 Premier League goals this season and 16 in his last 17 matches across all competitions, Sheringham said: "Manchester United is still a massive draw for players.
"Isak would undoubtedly consider joining if United made a bid. He’s confident, leads the line well, scores goals, and would be a statement signing for the club. He’d be perfect for United right now."
United have also been linked with Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyökeres, a 26-year-old striker who has scored an incredible 76 goals in 81 appearances since his move from Coventry City in 2023.
With Gyökeres’ proven scoring record, he remains another viable target as Amorim looks to bolster his attack.
The need for reinforcements is evident, with United’s current forwards struggling to deliver.
Rasmus Højlund, a £72m summer signing, has scored just two league goals this season, while Joshua Zirkzee is rumoured to be on his way out less than six months after arriving.
United return to Europa League action against Rangers on Thursday before hosting Fulham in the Premier League next weekend.
Whether new faces arrive in January or not, the pressure is mounting for Amorim to turn results around.
