Manchester United are now considering Wolves' Rayan Ait-Nouri as an alternative left-back signing
The club's primary target remains Paris Saint-Germain's Nuno Mendes, but a move for the Portuguese full-back is becoming increasingly unlikely.
As reported by The Independent, Mendes' £50m price tag and significant wage demands are proving to be major obstacles, especially with United needing to offload players to meet those financial requirements.
PSG are reluctant to part ways with the highly-rated defender and at the same time United have made little progress with offloading players.
We are now halfway through the January transfer window and time is running out for incorporations this month.
With Mendes' transfer growing doubtful, United have turned their attention to other options, including Ait-Nouri which are more practical at this stage.
The Algerian international has been a standout performer for Wolves during a challenging season, excelling both as a traditional left-back and an attacking wing-back.
This season, Ait-Nouri has contributed four goals and five assists in 22 appearances across all competitions, including three goals and five assists in the Premier League.
United's current left-back options—Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, and Tyrell Malacia—have struggled for consistency, prompting manager Ruben Amorim to seek reinforcements.
While Luke Shaw is nearing a return from yet another muscular injury, his recurring fitness issues have left the club exploring alternatives.
However, United’s pursuit of Ait-Nouri may hinge on the future of Tyrell Malacia, who has drawn interest from Juventus and Borussia Dortmund.
If Malacia departs, the financial flexibility to secure Ait-Nouri could be achieved.
Ait-Nouri's current contract with Wolves is set to expire next summer, though the club holds an option to extend it by another year.
Alongside the left-back, United are also keeping tabs on Wolves striker Matheus Cunha, but they face competition from Arsenal, who are also monitoring the forward.
