Ruben Amorim has criticized Andre Onana for his costly mistake against Brighton and urged the Manchester United goalkeeper to ‘stay focused.’
United endured a humiliating 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday, leaving the team in 13th place in the Premier League standings.
The performance left Amorim furious, with the head coach branding his struggling side as "the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United."
Onana’s blunder for Brighton’s third goal—where he mishandled a simple cross into the path of Georginio Rutter—was a key talking point post-match.
Amorim addressed the incident, saying:"It’s like the team—ups and downs. Really up sometimes, and then really low downs.
"We have to maintain our focus throughout the entire game to start winning matches. That’s the only way we can turn this around."
Amorim also expressed his frustration at the broader issues plaguing the team.
He stated:"In 10 games in the Premier League, we’ve won two. Imagine what this is like for a Manchester United fan.
"Imagine what it’s like for me. We’ve brought in a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I am fully aware of that."
The manager acknowledged the dire state of the team, adding:"We need to survive this moment. I’m not naïve—I know that we’re being the worst team, maybe in the history of Manchester United.
"I’m saying this because we need to acknowledge it to make changes. Here’s your headline: we are the worst team in Manchester United history."
The loss marked United’s sixth home Premier League defeat of the season, an unprecedented record for their opening 12 league games at Old Trafford since 1893-94.
Despite mounting criticism, Amorim reiterated his commitment to his tactics and philosophy, including the use of his favored 3-4-3 formation.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said:"I’m not going to change the way I see the game. I’m very clear on that.
"The players are going to suffer, and I’m sorry, the fans are going to suffer. But I have one way of doing things, and I know it will bring results. We just have to endure these tough moments."
