Manchester United crashed to a horror 3-1 defeat against Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday.
Brighton took an early lead when Yankuba Minteh found the back of the net just five minutes into the game.
United had two penalty appeals waved away before eventually being awarded a spot-kick after
Joshua Zirkzee was dragged down in the box by Carlos Baleba.
Bruno Fernandes calmly converted to level the score. In the second half, Brighton thought they had regained the lead through Joao Pedro, but VAR disallowed the goal for a foul on Diogo Dalot in the build-up.
However, Kaoru Mitoma restored Brighton's advantage just seven minutes later.
The game was effectively over when
Andre Onana’s mistake gifted Georginio Rutter a third goal for the visitors. Here’s how the United players rated at Old Trafford:
Player Ratings
Got a hand to Minteh's opener but couldn't prevent it. Failed to deal with Joao Pedro’s disallowed effort, was static for Mitoma’s goal, and his error led to Rutter’s third. A night to forget.
Matthijs de Ligt - 4
Struggled on the right of the back three and was caught flat-footed for the long ball leading to Minteh’s opener. A subpar showing.
Harry Maguire - 5
Endured a rough first half and drew groans from the crowd when he cleared a ball Onana could have handled. In hindsight, it might have been the right decision.
Leny Yoro - 5
Improved after his struggles midweek but gave Carlos Baleba too much space to cross for Rutter’s goal.
Noussair Mazraoui - 3
Overwhelmed by Kaoru Mitoma, who beat him twice for Brighton’s first two goals. Struggled defensively.
Manuel Ugarte - 5
Lost the midfield battle to Carlos Baleba and Yasin Ayari. Booked before being substituted after 60 minutes.
Kobbie Mainoo - 6
Showed more urgency than his last outing but failed to maintain his energy or influence in the second half.
Diogo Dalot - 5
Made a key intervention to deny Danny Welbeck before halftime. Fouled in the build-up to Brighton’s disallowed goal. Decent defensively.
Bruno Fernandes - 5
Scored the equalizer from the penalty spot with confidence but often made poor decisions in possession.
Amad - 6
His pressing created the penalty opportunity and was the only forward who posed a consistent threat in open play.
Joshua Zirkzee - 6
Worked hard and pressed effectively. Won the penalty that brought United level but didn’t offer much else.
Substitutes
Toby Collyer - 5
Had minimal impact on the game.
Alejandro Garnacho - 5
Went down too easily in a late penalty claim.
Antony - 5
Had little time to make a difference after coming on.
Rasmus Hojlund - 5
A quiet cameo, with the ball glancing off his back in a rare contribution.
Manager: Ruben Amorim - 5
His decision to recall Zirkzee was justified, as it improved United’s pressing, but he struggled to address the team’s ongoing goalscoring issues.
