Sir Alex Ferguson has paid a heartfelt tribute to
Denis Law, crediting the legendary striker with transforming
Manchester United Law, the only Scottish player to ever win the Ballon d'Or, passed away on Friday at the age of 84.
During his illustrious career, he spent 11 years at United, netting an impressive 237 goals in 404 appearances.
Teaming up with Bobby Charlton and George Best, Law played a central role in United's recovery following the Munich air disaster, helping Sir Matt Busby's side rebuild and achieve greatness.
The trio famously guided the team to become the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968.
"I think he turned the club around, and that’s the greatest thing you could say," Ferguson told MUTV.
"They were recovering from the Munich air disaster, and they won their first trophy in 1963, shortly after signing Denis.
"His role during that time was absolutely vital to the rebuilding of the team, and most people will always remember that. That signing from Italy was a cornerstone of their future success."
Law joined United from Torino and had two stints with Manchester City, but his time at Old Trafford cemented his status as a club icon.
Reflecting on Law’s impact both as a player and a person, Ferguson offered glowing praise.
"He was a real gentleman. He never let fame change him—he was so level-headed and down to earth," Ferguson recalled.
"He earned all those caps for Scotland and was dubbed the ‘King of Old Trafford.’ It’s interesting to think about why they called him the king.
"You had George Best and Bobby Charlton—arguably the greatest English player of all time and a phenomenal player for our club—but the fans called Denis the king.
"I think it’s because of the determination and will to win he displayed every time he stepped onto the pitch.
"He was fiercely competitive—fighting centre-halves, challenging goalkeepers, always giving everything he had.
"That natural competitiveness endeared him to the fans and made him their king. He was the best Scottish player of all time—a fantastic footballer and an incredible human being."
Ferguson’s moving tribute highlights the lasting legacy of Denis Law, whose contributions to Manchester United and football as a whole will never be forgotten.
