Defender Leny Yoro made his debut for
Manchester United away to Arsenal and is understood to be an integral figure in Ruben Amorim’s plans.
It was a disappointing night for United losing 2-0 at the Emirates but there was a significant milestone in the first match for 19-year-old Yoro who has struggled with injury problems since joining in the summer.
Yoro, who is set for a promising future at Old Trafford, has been one of United’s most significant acquisitions. The Lille star joined the Premier League giants following a £52m as United beat off plenty of competition.
A rocky start
Despite the high expectations, the inception of Yoro’s career in Manchester was marked by adversity, as he suffered a fractured metatarsal during a pre-season friendly against Arsenal in Los Angeles in July.
After successful surgery and weeks of rehabilitation, Yoro finally made his debut on Wednesday, replacing Harry Maguire 59 minutes into the match at the Emirates. Unfortunately, Yoro couldn't prevent his team from a 2-0 defeat against the Gunners.
Integral
Despite the initial stumbling blocks, both management and fans of United have a staunch belief in Yoro’s potential. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has highlighted Yoro's importance to Amorim's project at Old Trafford saying he is a recurring topic in 'every internal meeting' between the Portuguese coach and his staff, signifying the role the former Lille star is anticipated to play in the club's future.
Game time management
Ensuring Yoro’s fitness remains a priority, with his game time being carefully managed to avoid any injury risks. This meticulous approach signals Amorim's strategy as he prepares Yoro to become a core starting player for United.
Amorim experienced the harsh reality of the Premier League during the defeat to Arsenal. His demeanour showed the immense responsibility he has undertaken since arriving from Lisbon.
Despite well-laid plans, Amorim's disappointment was clear when the camera cut to him during the match. In deep thought, looking down while rubbing his forehead, his reaction was suggestive of the overwhelming responsibility that had finally caught up to him.
Post-match, Amorim acknowledged the need for improvement, emphasising the significant role set-pieces played in defining the match. Despite the defeat, he returned to his composed demeanour, assuring fans that United would draw positives from the difficult night and continue to invest efforts towards future successes.
