Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has been strongly linked to replace Ruben Amorim but Paul Merson says he is not the right man for the job.
Glasner has impressed at Selhurst Park since arriving in February, leading Palace on an 18-game unbeaten run and guiding them to silverware in the FA Cup and Community Shield.
Those achievements have seen his name rise to the top of the betting markets should United make a change.
But Merson believes Glasner’s tactical philosophy would clash with United’s current squad. “He’s a three-at-the-back man,” Merson Sky Sports. “It is being proven that it is a system that just doesn’t fit the players at Man Utd.”
United’s defensive struggles have been a recurring theme this season, and Merson argued that importing a coach wedded to a back-three formation would only add to the instability.
“When you come into a club like Manchester United, you have to fit with the players you’ve got. Glasner has done brilliantly at Palace, but this is a different challenge altogether," said Merson.
Speculation around Amorim’s future has intensified with the manager approaching his 50th game in charge amid a mixed run of results.
While Glasner has publicly downplayed the rumours, reports suggest he has rejected a new contract offer from Palace, further fuelling talk of a potential switch.
Merson, however, urged caution. “United need stability and someone who can get the best out of this group straight away," he said.
"You can’t just rip it all up and start again with a new system. That’s why I don’t see him as the right fit, even though he’s a top manager.”
For now, Glasner remains focused on Palace, while Amorim prepares United for Saturday’s home clash with Sunderland. But the debate over who might eventually succeed him continues — with Merson making it clear he isn’t convinced Glasner is the answer.
