Ex-Manchester United star Michael Carrick is being tipped as a potential interim manager should the club part ways with under-fire head coach Ruben Amorim.
Amorim who took charge a year ago has endured a rocky start to life at Old Trafford.
Poor results again this season capped by the 3-1 defeat at Brentford, has intensified scrutiny on the Portuguese coach.
While minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has so far stood by his man, pressure from fans, pundits, and former players is mounting.
Reports suggest contingency plans are already being drawn up, with Carrick’s name near the top of the list.
The 44-year-old is no stranger to the Manchester United dugout. Following Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s dismissal in November 2021, Carrick stepped in as caretaker boss, guiding the team to two wins and a draw in three matches, including a notable victory over Arsenal.
He later made way for Ralf Rangnick but earned praise for steadying the side in a difficult moment.
Since then, Carrick has been carving out his managerial career. He most recently managed Middlesbrough, where he oversaw a resurgence before leaving earlier this year.
Now unattached, his availability makes him an attractive option for United should they need a short-term solution, reported The Sun.
Carrick’s ties to the club remain strong. His son Jacey is part of United’s youth system, captaining the Under-16 side, while Carrick himself has remained active through punditry, exhibition matches, and coaching circles.
This connection to the club’s fabric may appeal to decision-makers seeking stability during another turbulent period.
Still, Carrick is not the only candidate linked with the job. United are reportedly also considering Oliver Glasner, Fabian Hürzeler, and Andoni Iraola as possible replacements if Amorim is removed.
The speculation reflects the uncertainty surrounding the club’s direction, with even legends such as Wayne Rooney admitting they have “no faith” in the current project.
Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, Carragher said: "I think he's still in a job because the powers that be at Man United have made that many mistakes on and off the pitch that they almost don't want to admit right now that they've made another.
"This has been a disaster for Man United and Ruben Amorim. What he did at Sporting Lisbon was fantastic and he looked like the next big thing as a manager.
"But bringing a manager with a system like his never suited the traditions of Man United and the quicker the club make a decision on the manager, I think it's better for everybody because it has been a disaster for the club but also the manager."
For now, Amorim continues to insist he will not compromise on his philosophy. But with results failing to improve, the possibility of a familiar face like Carrick stepping back into the spotlight grows stronger by the day.
