Manchester United could be set for a significant financial windfall this summer as former player
Mason Greenwood is reportedly in talks over a high-profile move to a European giant.
The 23-year-old, who left
Old Trafford permanently last summer, has been in outstanding form at Marseille, attracting serious interest from Barcelona.
Greenwood spent the 2023/24 season rebuilding his career on loan at Getafe, where he impressed with 10 goals and six assists in 36 appearances.
That earned him a £26.6m (€30m) transfer to Marseille, where he has since flourished, contributing 19 goal involvements (15 goals, four assists) in just 25 games.
His performances have catapulted him to second place in the Ligue 1 scoring charts, behind only PSG’s Ousmane Dembélé and ahead of highly sought-after talents like Jonathan David and Bradley Barcola.
Barcelona Make Greenwood Their Priority Signing
Greenwood’s form has already sparked speculation over another move, with both PSG and Barcelona reportedly interested. Now, Fichajes claims that Barcelona have intensified their pursuit, with sporting director Deco making Greenwood the club’s top attacking target—surpassing even long-term priority Nico Williams.
According to the report, negotiations have begun between the two clubs, and despite Marseille valuing Greenwood at a hefty €75m (£62.2m, $78.7m), Barcelona remain determined to push the deal through. However, any agreement will likely depend on player sales to accommodate the financial demands.
What Greenwood’s Sale Means for Manchester United
As part of the deal that took Greenwood to Marseille, United negotiated a 50% profit clause on any future sale. Should Marseille finalize a £62.2m transfer, the club would make a profit of £35.6m—half of which (£17.8m) would go back to Old Trafford.
While Fichajes is currently the only source reporting advanced talks, the story has caught the attention of the Manchester Evening News, as United seek any positive financial news amid ongoing cost-cutting measures, including the planned closure of the club’s canteen.
A potential cash injection from Greenwood’s sale would be a major boost for INEOS and United’s summer transfer plans, especially given the club’s current struggles to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
United’s Transfer Plans: Key Signings in Sight
Ruben Amorim is desperate to strengthen his squad after a disastrous campaign that sees United languishing in 15th place, 15 points adrift of the Champions League spots. The Portuguese coach remains committed to his 3-4-2-1 system—despite criticism—and is targeting players suited to that formation.
Key priorities for the summer include:✅ A right-sided wing-back✅ At least one new midfielder✅ A new centre-forward
Amorim has reportedly identified Victor Osimhen as his preferred striker, with recent reports claiming a deal to bring the Napoli star to Old Trafford is now "95% done."
Additionally, United are actively pursuing a double deal for Geovany Quenda and Morten Hjulmand from Sporting Lisbon, worth a combined £82.9m.
On a more budget-friendly note, the club is also working to secure two of Ligue 1’s best free agents, with Jonathan David and former United academy star Angel Gomes both on their radar as their contracts with Lille run down.
With a crucial summer ahead, Greenwood’s potential sale could provide United with much-needed funds to accelerate their rebuild and put Amorim’s project on firmer ground.
