Rasmus Højlund’s time at Manchester United is coming to an end with a move to Napoli on the point of being agreed for £34million.
United and Napoli have reached a verbal agreement over a deal that would see the Danish striker move to Serie A on an initial loan, with an obligation to buy.
The agreement, as outlined by Gianluca Di Marzio and other outlets, is expected to be worth around €45 million in total, combining a loan fee with a mandatory purchase clause.
The obligation is believed to be conditional, triggered by performance-related factors such as the number of appearances Højlund makes, his goal return, and whether Napoli secure Champions League qualification.
For United, it represents a quick turnaround in the 22-year-old’s fortunes. Signed from Atalanta last summer for over £70m, Højlund arrived at Old Trafford with huge expectations, billed as the club’s long-term No.9.
However, despite flashes of promise, injuries and inconsistency have prevented him from cementing a starting role. The arrival of Benjamin Šeško this summer further increased competition, casting fresh doubt on his future at the club.
Napoli, meanwhile, see Højlund as a ready-made replacement for Victor Osimhen, who departed earlier in the window.
The Danish forward’s athleticism and ability to stretch defences align well with the Italian champions’ attacking blueprint, and they are confident he can rediscover his form in Serie A, where he previously impressed with Atalanta.
Di Marzio adds that if personal terms are agreed smoothly, Højlund could complete the move as soon as August 29, providing a swift resolution to one of the summer’s lingering sagas.
For United, it would be another significant outgoing under Ruben Amorim’s rebuild, freeing up funds and space in attack while allowing the player a fresh start abroad.
Whether Højlund thrives in Naples or United come to regret cutting ties so quickly remains to be seen, but his imminent exit marks another bold reshaping of the squad as Old Trafford continues its search for stability.
