Manchester United have confirmed that Lisandro Martinez has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), dealing a devastating blow to the Argentine defender and the club's season.
Martinez, 27, was stretchered off in tears during United’s 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday after an innocuous collision with Ismaila Sarr in the 82nd minute.
Initial fears within the United dressing room suggested Martinez would be sidelined for the remainder of the season, with reports from Argentina later confirming the ACL injury.
United issued an official statement on Tuesday: "Manchester United can confirm that Lisandro Martinez suffered an injury to his cruciate ligament in Sunday’s game against Crystal Palace.
"Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the appropriate course of treatment and the timescale for his rehabilitation.
"Everyone at Manchester United wishes Lisandro Martinez strength for a successful recovery, and we will be supporting him every step of the way."

Injury-Plagued Spell at Old Trafford

Since arriving from Ajax in July 2022, Martinez has suffered multiple significant injuries, disrupting his impact at United.
  • He missed the final six weeks of the 2022-23 season due to a fractured metatarsal.
  • He required corrective surgery in September 2023, ruling him out for four months.
  • He was sidelined for eight weeks in early 2024 with a medial collateral ligament injury.
  • A calf problem in March 2024 led to another six-and-a-half-week absence.

United’s Defensive Options Without Martinez

With Martinez out until next season, United still have six specialist centre-backs following the signing of 18-year-old Ayden Heaven from Arsenal.
Additionally, Noussair Mazraoui has featured in Ruben Amorim’s back three, while Casemiro was deployed at centre-back seven times last season.
Despite the injury crisis, Amorim will now have to reshape his defensive plans as United push through the remainder of the campaign.
