Manchester United defender
Lisandro Martinez has praised teammate Toby Collyer, calling him an "example to the young generation".
Martinez was speaking after United’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday.
Martinez was the hero at Craven Cottage, scoring the decisive goal in the 78th minute with a deflected strike.
Fulham nearly equalized late in the game, but
Collyer made a remarkable goal-line clearance in the 88th minute to preserve United’s lead and secure three valuable points.
The 21-year-old midfielder, who came on as a second-half substitute for Manuel Ugarte, has impressed in 2025, earning praise from both his teammates and fans.
Bruno Fernandes highlighted Collyer’s contributions after the midweek win against Rangers, and Martinez joined in the chorus of compliments following the Fulham match.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Martinez expressed his delight with the team’s performance and Collyer’s impact:"I think it was lucky [the goal], but I’m really happy with the way we won the game.
"It doesn’t matter who scored; the most important thing is the three points and how we fight, play, and show character and personality.
"And I’m so happy because of this guy [Collyer]. Honestly, this guy is a big example to the young generation. I’m really happy for him because he’s working so hard every day and is so humble. He deserves it all."
Collyer, visibly thrilled by the praise, responded humbly:"It’s unbelievable, and it [the praise] comes from a World Cup winner, so I couldn’t ask for anyone better, really.
"I just keep working hard. It’s a tough environment, and it makes you better as a player. I remember clearing it and thinking, ‘Has that gone over the line?’ but luckily, it hadn’t."
Reflecting on the significance of the win, Martinez added:"It means a lot—not only to the fans but to us—because we suffer a lot, and it’s a really hard win.
"When you lose at this club, the pressure is really hard. But we are here. We know how difficult it is, but we have to show every game, like today, that we can win and remain humble after winning."
The victory lifted Manchester United to 12th place in the Premier League table, offering a much-needed morale boost as the team works to regain consistency and confidence.
