Harry Maguire has admitted he’s been “surprised” and “humbled” by the level of support he’s received from
Manchester United fans during what he called one of the most mentally challenging seasons of his career.
Speaking ahead of the
Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur, the 31-year-old centre-back reflected on a season of ups and downs — both personally and for the club.
Maguire has re-established himself in the starting XI under Rúben Amorim, playing a crucial role in United’s European run, but his return to form has come after years of intense criticism and speculation about his future.
“There have been times when it’s been tough,” Maguire told
ESPN. “You hear the noise, and at a club like Manchester United, that’s part of the job. But the fans have been great with me this season — and to be honest, it surprised me a bit.”
Maguire was stripped of the captaincy last summer under Erik ten Hag and was linked with a move away from Old Trafford. However, he stayed and has since delivered consistent performances, particularly in the
Europa League, where he’s been one of United’s standout defenders.
“I think the fans have seen I’ve never stopped giving everything for the badge. That’s all I can do,” he added.
His leadership has become more prominent again in the absence of Lisandro Martínez and with the inconsistency of Matthijs de Ligt due to injuries. Amorim is expected to start Maguire in the final, anchoring a defence that may also feature Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot.
The England international, who has faced heavy media scrutiny throughout his United career, said the support he’s received — especially on European away nights — has been a driving force behind his determination.
“It gives you a lift when fans back you. You want to prove them right,” he said.
As United prepare for what could be a season-defining match in Bilbao, Maguire’s resurgence and his connection with supporters may well prove to be one of the club’s most underappreciated storylines this year.
