Gary Neville has called for a massive squad clear-out, urging the club to part ways with at least ten players this summer in order to rebuild a competitive team under manager
Ruben Amorim.
Speaking following United’s dismal 2-0 defeat to West Ham, which left them languishing in 16th place in the Premier League,
Neville didn’t hold back in his assessment.
He described the current squad as “disjointed, unmotivated, and out of sync with the club’s values.”
The former club captain and Sky Sports pundit believes United’s problems go far deeper than coaching and tactics — and that the dressing room is filled with players who either don’t fit the manager’s system or lack the hunger to succeed at the top level.
“There are too many passengers at United. Too many who think they’re doing the club a favour. Ten of them need to go — minimum,” Neville reportedly told
Sky Sports News. While he didn’t name specific players, fans and pundits alike have pointed to underperforming stars like Antony, Casemiro, Jadon Sancho, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and even Marcus Rashford as candidates for potential exits.
Neville also emphasized that co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS team must give Amorim the support and freedom to build a squad in his image.
Amorim, who arrived from Sporting CP in November, has already hinted at significant changes ahead, especially with Financial Fair Play restrictions requiring outgoings to fund new signings.
United are reportedly targeting young, hungry players who can thrive in a high-pressing, tactically disciplined system — a stark contrast to the current squad, many of whom were signed on large fees and wages during previous managerial regimes.
This summer is being described as a “make or break” moment for Manchester United. With a Europa League final still to play — and a Champions League spot potentially on the line — Neville’s warning is timely. If the club fails to act decisively, the gap to their Premier League rivals may only grow wider.
