Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho has sparked controversy among fans after posting a photo of himself wearing an Aston Villa shirt bearing Marcus Rashford’s name while on holiday.
The Argentine shared the image on social media, showing solidarity with his teammate Rashford, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Villa after falling out of favour with United manager Ruben Amorim.
Rashford, who still has two years left on his Manchester United contract, responded to Garnacho’s post by commenting, “My brother,” accompanied by a heart emoji.
The gesture was seen as a show of support between the two players, both of whom currently face uncertain futures at Old Trafford.
However, Garnacho’s decision to wear the shirt of a Premier League rival did not sit well with many United supporters.
Some fans criticized the move as disrespectful, especially given the tense atmosphere surrounding the club following a difficult season and the recent Europa League final defeat.
Manchester United fan Mark Goldbridge described the post as “bang out of order” to the supporters who have backed Garnacho.
Garnacho’s own future at the club remains unclear after manager Ruben Amorim reportedly told the 20-year-old winger in May that he should seek a new club this summer.
The player’s frustration was evident following United’s 1-0 loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final, where he was an unused substitute.
After the match, Garnacho hinted at uncertainty about his future, saying he would “try to enjoy the summer and see what happens afterwards.”
Both Garnacho and Rashford are expected to be excluded from Manchester United’s upcoming pre-season tour and may be required to train separately at the club’s Carrington training ground if they cannot secure moves elsewhere.
Several clubs, including Chelsea, Bayer Leverkusen, Atletico Madrid, and Serie A champions Napoli, have reportedly shown interest in Garnacho.
The photo of Garnacho wearing Rashford’s Villa shirt has fueled debate among fans about the players’ commitment to Manchester United, with some calling for both to leave the club.
Despite the backlash, the post appears to be a personal gesture of support between teammates navigating uncertain futures at Old Trafford.
