Marcus Rashford has made his intentions clear regarding his future, openly expressing a strong desire to join Barcelona as he looks set to leave Manchester United this summer.
The 27-year-old forward, who spent the latter half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, has dropped his biggest hints yet about wanting a move to the Camp Nou, following reports that his agent and brother, Dwaine Maynard, met with Barcelona sporting director Deco in Catalunya last month.
Rashford’s relationship with United manager Ruben Amorim has reportedly broken down, and with Villa opting not to make his loan permanent, his future at Old Trafford looks bleak.
Rashford, currently training in Marbella to maintain fitness and prepare for a transfer, has not ruled out returning to United for pre-season if no move materialises, but his preference is clear.
Speaking to Spanish YouTube channel XBuyer while on holiday, Rashford was asked if he would like to play with Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.
He replied, “Yeah, sure. Everybody in the world wants to play with the best. So hopefully, we’ll see.” He went on to praise Yamal’s extraordinary talent, saying, “Lamine is playing in the elite at 17 years old. I don’t think we’ve seen this before.
"It’s hard to describe in words what he’s doing, because he shouldn’t be doing it at 16 or 18. What he does is not normal, because, in addition, he is going to improve, so we will not know what we will say about him in three years’ time.
"The mentality he has to naturalize it is another of his skills. Of course I would like to (play with him). We all want to play with the best. Hopefully. We’ll see.”
Barcelona remain interested in Rashford, but their main priority is signing Athletic Club’s Nico Williams, with Rashford considered a more affordable alternative if that deal proves too costly.
United are reportedly seeking a fee of around £25-34 million for Rashford, but Barcelona would prefer a loan move and are unwilling to meet United’s financial demands at this stage.
Rashford, for his part, is willing to lower his wages to facilitate a move to Spain.
With United also open to offers for other forwards like Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, and Antony, the club’s negotiating position is weakened, and they may have to wait until later in the summer window to finalise any deals.
For now, Rashford continues to wait for Barcelona’s decision, hoping to fulfil his dream of playing at the Camp Nou alongside the likes of Lamine Yamal
