Ryan Giggs has once again been left out of the Premier League Hall of Fame nominations, sparking anger among
Manchester United fans.
The 51-year-old remains the most decorated player in English top-flight history, with 13 Premier League titles, 632 appearances, and 162 assists – the latter still a record.
Yet, despite these achievements,
Giggs has repeatedly been overlooked since the Hall of Fame was launched in 2021, with supporters saying the omission undermines the award’s credibility.
Fan Backlash
The exclusion prompted widespread criticism on social media, with fans branding the omission “criminal” and “null and void.” Many highlighted that Giggs’s sustained excellence across two decades set a standard for consistency and professionalism in the modern era.
One supporter wrote: “How can the Premier League celebrate its history without including the player who defined it?” while others pointed out that several less decorated
players have already been inducted.
Selection Debate
The Hall of Fame celebrates players who have made an “exceptional contribution” to the Premier League since its inception in 1992.
Inductees are chosen through a mix of expert panel selection and public vote.
While the Premier League has never formally commented on Giggs’s repeated exclusion, speculation continues that off-field controversies may have influenced decisions.
Giggs stepped down from his role as Wales boss prior to the World Cup in Qatar prior to a trial on charges of allegedly causing actual bodily harm and coercive and controlling behaviour.
A jury was unable to reach a verdict before the 51-year-old was cleared the following year when the Crown Prosecution Service withdrew charges prior to the scheduled retrial.
Giggs is currently the sporting director at League Two side Salford City, a role he has held since February 2024.
Legacy Unquestioned
Regardless of the omission, Giggs’s legacy at Manchester United remains untouchable. He scored in 21 consecutive league seasons, won 34 trophies in total with the club, and remains a key symbol of Sir Alex Ferguson’s dynasty.
For many fans, his absence diminishes the Hall of Fame’s credibility. As one United supporter group noted: “You cannot tell the story of the Premier League without Ryan Giggs.”
