Nicky Butt has questioned Manchester United’s decision to sign striker Benjamin Šeško, warning the move could mirror last season’s frustrations with Rasmus Højlund.
Šeško, 21, joined United this summer with high expectations after impressing in the Bundesliga, but Butt believes the deal carries risks that the club cannot afford.
United endured one of their worst goal-scoring campaigns in decades last season, failing to score in 13 Premier League matches and recording a negative goal difference for the first time since the early 1990s.
For Butt, who won six league titles and was part of the famous treble-winning team of 1999, the priority should have been a proven striker capable of delivering immediately. Instead, United opted for another young forward still adapting to the demands of elite football.
“I worry we’re going down the same road again,” Butt said. “Šeško is talented, no doubt, but he’s still developing.
"We’ve already seen with Rasmus Højlund how tough it can be to carry that pressure at such a young age. United need goals right now, not in two or three years’ time.”
Butt suggested the club should have considered players like Ollie Watkins, whose consistent scoring record for Aston Villa and England demonstrates he can handle the Premier League stage.
“If you want to challenge at the top, you need someone who knows the league, who can guarantee you 15 or 20 goals,” he added, reported The Sun.
Šeško’s signing reflects the long-term strategy promoted by manager Rúben Amorim, who has placed faith in young players since arriving at Old Trafford.
But with the team struggling to break into the top half of the table, fans and former players alike are beginning to question whether potential is enough.
United’s new number nine has already shown glimpses of quality in pre-season, but as Butt warned, the real test will come when the pressure intensifies.
With the club desperate to restore its attacking threat, much will depend on whether Šeško can settle quickly — or whether history repeats itself with another young forward struggling to carry the weight of Old Trafford.
