Onana's decision could see Man Utd move collapse as clubs agree deal

Manchester United and Trabzonspor have reached a verbal agreement over the loan of goalkeeper André Onana, but the move is not yet complete as the player himself must still approve the deal.

With the Turkish transfer window set to close on September 12, both clubs are hopeful of reaching a final resolution within days.

Onana, 29, has endured a turbulent spell at Old Trafford since joining from Inter Milan in 2023. His high-profile errors and inconsistent form saw him lose his starting spot this season

He has featured only once—during the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town, a performance that further damaged his standing.

United’s goalkeeper situation has shifted quickly. Altay Bayindir is currently being preferred, while the arrival of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp has added new competition.

With veteran Tom Heaton also in the squad, Onana has slipped down the pecking order. The club view a loan as a chance to ease pressure on the player and recalibrate their goalkeeper setup.

From Trabzonspor’s perspective, Onana represents a marquee signing with Champions League experience who can immediately raise their level, reported The Sun.

Negotiations between the clubs have progressed smoothly, with terms agreed, but United sources stress that the final decision lies with the Cameroon international.

Initially, Onana was said to be determined to fight for his place at United. However, with AFCON commitments looming and limited game time expected under Rúben Amorim, the loan option now looks increasingly attractive.

Still, he must weigh the opportunity against uprooting mid-season and leaving behind unfinished business in Manchester.

For United, the risk is clear. With the Manchester derby just around the corner, they are set to rely heavily on Bayindir or the untested Lammens. Letting Onana leave could leave Amorim’s side exposed if form or injuries become an issue.
