André Onana has been linked heavily with a loan switch to Turkish side Trabzonspor before their transfer window shuts on September 12.
Signed by Manchester United from Inter Milan in 2023 for £47 million, Onana was expected to be the long-term successor to David de Gea.
Instead, a string of costly errors and inconsistent form have undermined his position. His most recent outing—a shaky performance in United’s shock Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town—has intensified calls from supporters for the club to cut their losses.
Reports in both the UK and Turkey suggest Trabzonspor have submitted a loan offer, and United are seriously considering sanctioning the move.
Fans have taken to social media urging the club to “accept with immediate effect,” reflecting the growing impatience around the goalkeeper’s struggles.
Complicating matters further is United’s reshaped goalkeeping department. Belgian stopper Senne Lammens, signed from Royal Antwerp this week for £18 million, has immediately been tipped as a contender for the No. 1 role.
Meanwhile, Altay Bayindir has been preferred in Premier League fixtures, leaving Onana effectively as third-choice. The club’s pursuit of Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez adds another layer of uncertainty to Onana’s future.
For Onana, a loan move could provide an opportunity to reset his career away from the Old Trafford spotlight, reported The Sun.
For United, shifting him off the wage bill, even temporarily, would ease financial pressure while allowing new recruits to bed in. The Cameroonian has admirers in the Saudi Pro League as well, though no formal bid has yet materialised.
The coming week could prove decisive. If a deal with Trabzonspor is finalised, it would mark a swift and dramatic fall for a player once considered among Europe’s elite.
If not, Onana faces an uncomfortable reality: watching from the sidelines as others take up the mantle he was brought in to carry.
Either way, Manchester United’s goalkeeping hierarchy has been reshaped—perhaps permanently—and Onana’s Old Trafford chapter looks increasingly close to its end.
