Manchester United have been handed a major lift with Matheus Cunha in line to return for the Manchester derby on September 14.
The Brazilian forward had sparked concern after limping off with a hamstring issue, but medical assessments have since revealed the injury is not as serious as first feared.
United sources now describe Cunha’s chances of featuring against City as “hopeful,” while the player himself has fueled optimism with a positive update on social media.
Posting to Instagram, Cunha reassured supporters: “I’ll be back soon, always with joy and gratitude.” His upbeat message has been matched by encouraging signs at Carrington, where he was recently spotted working on an exercise bike as part of his rehabilitation programme.
The timing of Cunha’s recovery could prove crucial for manager Rúben Amorim. With the derby already looming as a pivotal moment in United’s season, the Portuguese coach is eager to have his summer signing available.
Cunha’s versatility, ability to carry the ball at pace, and instinct for exploiting space in behind would offer a valuable dimension against Pep Guardiola’s high defensive line.
Since arriving, the 26-year-old has quickly become a fan favourite, injecting energy and creativity into United’s attack.
His absence last week highlighted how integral he has already become, with the side struggling to find fluidity in the final third. A fit and confident Cunha could be the difference between United competing toe-to-toe with their neighbours or being overrun.
Of course, caution remains. The medical staff are carefully managing his workload to ensure he does not suffer a setback. Amorim will be reluctant to risk him too early, but the signs suggest Cunha is determined to play his part on derby day.
For United fans, the prospect of Cunha lining up at the Etihad is a welcome boost after a turbulent start to the season. If he makes it, his return will not only strengthen United’s frontline but also inject fresh belief into a squad desperate to make a statement against their fiercest rivals.
