Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt believes his side showed “some improvements” in their 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
Despite playing with ten men for over half the match following Patrick Dorgu’s first-half red card, United secured their first Premier League win in over a month.
Harry Maguire’s decisive header early in the second half sealed the victory. United endured a nightmare start, falling behind after just four minutes when Jaden Philogene capitalized on a mix-up between Andre Onana and Dorgu.
However, they responded swiftly, turning the game around with a Sam Morsy own goal and De Ligt’s first strike since September.
Dorgu’s dismissal for a reckless challenge on Omari Hutchinson gave Ipswich a boost, and Philogene’s cross evaded everyone to level the score just before halftime. But United dug deep, with Maguire heading home from a Bruno Fernandes corner to clinch the win.

De Ligt: "A Hard-Fought Victory"

Reflecting on the game, De Ligt told MUTV: “I think it was a hard-fought win. In the second half, we had to fight with ten men, and even scoring in that situation was a really good achievement.
“We played well after the break, but even in the first half, we weren’t bad—we just conceded two silly goals. That can happen in football. Overall, I think we made some improvements compared to the last game.”

Building Confidence for Fulham Clash

With an FA Cup fifth-round tie against Fulham coming up on Sunday, De Ligt believes the victory over Ipswich will provide a crucial confidence boost.
“This was a really important game for us. We know the situation we are in.
“At halftime, being down to ten men and level at 2-2, we knew it was going to be a tough second half. So to come out with a win is massive, and hopefully, we can build on this against Fulham.”
United will now shift their focus to the domestic cup competition, aiming to carry their momentum into the weekend.
