Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim will talk to
Alejandro Garnacho after the winger headed straight down the tunnel following his first-half substitution in Wednesday night’s
3-2 win over Ipswich Town.
Garnacho was withdrawn in the 43rd minute after left-back Patrick Dorgu received a red card, with Amorim opting to replace him with full-back Noussair Mazraoui.
The change saw United shift from a 3-4-2-1 to a 5-3-1 formation, leaving Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Højlund as the remaining attackers.
Although Amorim consoled Garnacho before he exited the pitch, the 20-year-old walked straight down the tunnel and was not seen in the second half. He later posted a photo of his disappointed reaction on Instagram.
Garnacho and Marcus Rashford were previously dropped for United’s 2-1 win at Manchester City in December, and Amorim hinted that he was working to build a connection with the young winger following his visible frustration.
Amorim: “I Will Talk with Garnacho”
When asked about Garnacho’s reaction, Amorim initially joked: "Was cold and wet maybe."
He then explained his decision: “The thinking was that we played more in a 5-3-1. I know that’s a risk because we took off the only player who has one-on-one ability and pace.
"But I felt the team was okay, and we were controlling the game at halftime. We had to make a choice, and we also had to think about set pieces. That was my decision.”
When a reporter drew parallels between Garnacho’s reaction and Rashford’s lack of acknowledgment after being substituted in December, Amorim responded: "You are making a connection with Rashford, right?
"I know, I know. What I am saying is I am going to talk with Garnacho about that. I will discuss it if you want in the next press conference."
United’s Win and Premier League Standing
United fell behind early to a Jaden Philogene strike but responded with goals from a Sam Morsy own goal and Matthijs de Ligt.
Ipswich equalized shortly after Dorgu’s dismissal, but Harry Maguire secured the win with a header early in the second half—United’s third goal from a set piece.
The victory lifted United to 14th place in the Premier League, with every position in the table worth an additional £3 million in prize money. Amorim acknowledged the fans’ support, saying: "Well deserved by the fans.
"The support was amazing, and I felt that since day one, they just want to see the team fight until the end, no matter the situation. I think we did that today.
“You have that feeling, connection with the fans. Everything in the game was against us, but we fought through it, and it was a good win for us."
United will now turn their attention to Sunday’s FA Cup clash with Fulham as they look to build momentum.
