Manchester United suffered a significant setback when Argentine centre-back, Lisandro Martinez, sustained a severe knee injury earlier in February.
Martinez's anterior cruciate ligament problem has ruled him out for the rest of the season, adding to the woes of the Red Devils who are currently placed at 14th in the Premier League.
Velez club president, Fabian Berlanga, reportedly made efforts to offload defender Valentin Gomez to Manchester United amidst their growing injury concerns.
However, the Red Devils showed no interest in the 21-year-old former Argentina Under-20 international.
Berlanga mentioned, “Through someone I know, I asked Manchester United to find out if they wanted him because of Licha Martínez’s injury. It was divided between the CEO and the coach, and they said no. Velez is interested in selling him.”

Manchester United’s Defensive Woes

The defensive line of Manchester United has shown signs of instability this season. Summer signings, Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro, along with Harry Maguire, have been inconsistent in maintaining a sturdy defence.
The situation was further complicated when Patrick Dorgu was sent off in his debut Premier League match at Old Trafford against Ipswich Town. Injured Luke Shaw remains another concern. Despite these challenges, Manchester United decided against recruiting Gomez.
There are rumours that United is hoping to sign Sporting CP's young talent, Geovany Quenda, in the summer. This seems to be the next step for the Red Devils in their search for defensive stability, while Gomez’s chance to join the English giants looks to have been postponed.
