Michael Carrick said he was "delighted" with Benjamin Sesko's goal and revealed what he told the Manchester United players at half time to inspire them to beat Crystal Palace.
It was a sloppy start from United and they struggled in the first half to bounce back after conceding early.
Maxence Lacroix lost Leny Yoro and sent a free header from Brennan Johnson's corner past Senne Lammens for the opener.
But after the break United pushed forward with renewed intent and the game turned on a penalty scored by Bruno Fernandes after Lacroix was sent off.
The defender pulled back Matheus Cunha in the box for the spot-kick and he was also given his marching orders.
Fernandes scored from 12 yards and then crossed for Sesko to grab the winner.
Afterwards Carrick admitted United were slow early on and he tried to get them back on track at half time.
We were a bit off it if we're honest, we know that, the boys have spoken about it," Carrick told MUTV.
"We didn't start the game great, it was probably the first time really coming in at half time, I think we progressed in the half and finished okay with a few opportunities.
"At half time it was just about calming things down a little bit saying it's the first time we have been there and it's 'come on then, what are we going to do next'.
"I was delighted with the response of the players to show that confidence and positivity to come back into the game in the second half against a team which defensively are really, really good and difficult to break down.
"We can take a lot from that game because it was a big test for us today and we've overcome it."
And on Sesko's goal he said: "Absolutely delighted, it was a fantastic header, a big moment again for and it will do them the world of good."
