Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire both went off in Manchester United's win over Crystal Palace and
Michael Carrick has given an update on their fitness.
United have had their matches spread out this season with the team not in Europe but they now take on Newcastle on Wednesday hot on the heels of the Palace clash.
Carrick has made an impressive start at the helm of United with six wins from seven games and now United face another stern test against Newcastle as they fight for a Champions League place.
He lost two defenders against Palace with Shaw going off early and then Maguire later in the game, while Lisandro Martinez and
Matthijs de Ligt both missed the clash through injury.
Shaw appeared to take heavy knock from Daniel Munoz but played on until the 24th minute, when he was unable to continue, despite receiving treatment on the pitch.
He made his way straight down the tunnel and then in the second half Maguire went off and was replaced by Ayden Heaven.
Speaking to BBC after the game, boss Carrick stated that it was illness affecting the two defenders, rather than injury.
"They just weren’t feeling too well, so, hopefully, they will be feeling better soon," he said.
It suggests that they will both be ready for the Newcastle game and so avoid a more serious problem with absentees.
There has been no further news on the situation with Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt who were unavailable for the victory against Palace.
Carrick said he was "delighted" with Benjamin Sesko's goal and revealed what he told the Manchester United players at half time to inspire them to beat Crystal Palace.
"We were a bit off it if we're honest, we know that, the boys have spoken about it," Carrick told MUTV.
"We didn't start the game great, it was probably the first time really coming in at half time, I think we progressed in the half and finished okay with a few opportunities.
"At half time it was just about calming things down a little bit saying it's the first time we have been there and it's 'come on then, what are we going to do next'.
"I was delighted with the response of the players to show that confidence and positivity to come back into the game in the second half against a team which defensively are really, really good and difficult to break down.
"We can take a lot from that game because it was a big test for us today and we've overcome it."
