A frustrated
Bruno Fernandes has called on
Manchester United to replicate the performance levels they displayed in their spirited 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
Despite entering the match as underdogs, the Red Devils exceeded expectations and earned a point through Amad’s late equalizer, following a game that saw Lisandro Martínez score after a clever assist from Fernandes.
Liverpool responded with goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah, but United’s perseverance paid off in the end. The draw moved United up to 13th in the Premier League table, though their overall form this season has been disappointing.
While Fernandes acknowledged the team’s improved showing, he expressed frustration over their inconsistency in previous matches.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "We have been criticised and fairly. Our position in the table says it all; we have lost too many points.
"Even today, we can't be happy with a point. We need the points, and we could've won the game at the end, but it's a fair result. Both teams played good football."
Fernandes didn’t hold back on his dissatisfaction with the team’s lack of consistency: "I'm pretty upset. If we show this level at Liverpool, first in the league, why can't we do this everywhere?
"It frustrates me. Also, finally, I did a proper performance. We said we need much more from ourselves to get more from this season."
He emphasized the importance of maintaining the same passion and determination in future games.
He said: "We know how tough it is to play against Liverpool. Today we put in a real effort to the game; playing with some passion and heart is what is going to give you something from the game.
"You have to put in effort, and that's why we took something from today.
"It can't stop here. We have to bring this frustration to the next game to understand this has to be the level. If we can do it at Anfield, we have to do it everywhere."
Manager Ruben Amorim echoed Fernandes’ sentiments when asked about the team’s focus moving forward. He stressed the importance of building consistency in both their approach and execution:
"That is clear. Everybody thinks the same thing. We have to start someday to be consistent. Not in the way we play but in how we face the competition—so let's start today."
The draw at Anfield offered a glimpse of what United are capable of, but both Fernandes and Amorim made it clear that this level of performance must become the standard if the team is to climb higher in the league table.
