Luke Shaw has sparked controversy among fans after appearing in a TikTok video with Love Island star Molly-Mae Hague.
The injured
Manchester United defender, who earns £150,000 a week, joined the New Year’s celebrations alongside his wife, Anouska, and Molly-Mae, Tommy Fury’s partner.
Shaw, sidelined for most of the season due to injuries, was featured mouthing the words, “Your mum’s on benefits,” from a popular TikTok trend. The clip quickly went viral, but many fans criticized the timing, given United’s struggles on the pitch.
One fan tweeted, “Manchester United in the worst form of my lifetime, and
Luke Shaw is doing TikToks with Molly-Mae,” while another added, “If Fergie was still in charge, he’d never play again. Embarrassing club!”
A third fan harshly remarked, “We’re fighting relegation, and he’s out here joking around on TikTok. Is this even a football club anymore?”
Shaw, who has only played three games this season, has not started for United since February 2024.
After returning to action briefly in November, he was sidelined again after just 68 minutes of playing time.
Fans have expressed frustration, suggesting Shaw should prioritize his recovery and focus on helping the struggling team. United currently sit 14th in the Premier League, with manager Ruben Amorim acknowledging the looming threat of relegation.
However, Shaw has also received support from a portion of the fanbase.
“Fans are so toxic it’s embarrassing,” one wrote. “Yes, a player is allowed to have some fun and banter over New Year’s with friends and family. Get over it.”
Another added, “Are footballers not allowed to have lives outside of football? It’s ridiculous to criticize someone for enjoying five seconds of a video.”
A third fan noted, “He appeared in less than five seconds of a clip, and you’re giving him heat. Don’t you think they’re allowed a personal life? Do you dedicate yourself to your job so much that even five seconds on social media is a problem?”
Shaw’s critics and defenders will look to see if United can bring positivity back to Old Trafford when they face Liverpool on Sunday, January 5.
After an inspiring win against local rivals Manchester City, manager Ruben Amorim hopes to replicate that success against one of United’s fiercest opponents.
