Ruben Amorim showed little joy after
Manchester United’s spirited 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, despite the result ending a four-match losing streak.
The Red Devils delivered one of their best performances in recent weeks, defying pre-match expectations and nearly snatching all three points in the dying moments.
United started strong, quieting the Anfield crowd and creating the better chances in the first half.
Amad missed a close-range header, while
Rasmus Højlund failed to capitalize on a one-on-one opportunity.
After the break, Lisandro Martínez stunned the home fans with a thunderous strike to give United the lead.
However, Liverpool responded with Cody Gakpo’s curled equalizer and Mohamed Salah’s penalty, briefly flipping the game in their favor. Amad salvaged a point for United late on, scoring in front of the traveling fans to cap off a resilient display.
The draw marked a much-needed improvement for United, halting Liverpool's charge toward a potential 20th league title.
Yet, Amorim was far from content post-match, emphasizing his frustration at his team’s inability to replicate this level of performance in their recent losses.
“That should be a big issue for our players—that anyone could believe we have the ability but lack the character,” Amorim told Sky Sports. “We have to fight that perception and change it.
“It’s very clear: when we focus, fight for every ball, suffer, and leave everything on the pitch, we’re a good team. But if we don’t do that consistently, we’ll lose games.
“We controlled the tempo well today. Every time Liverpool had a chance, we managed to regain control and kept the ball when we needed to, winning fouls and managing transitions.
“It was a good game, and I’m pleased with the performance, but I’m not happy with the result. And honestly, I’m furious about the previous games.”
United came into the match off a dismal end to 2024, suffering defeats to Tottenham, Bournemouth, Wolves, and Newcastle.
Amorim’s frustration is understandable given the early struggles of his tenure, but the draw offers a glimmer of optimism as he looks ahead to his first full year in charge.
The immediate challenge for United is another major test: a trip to Arsenal in the FA Cup third round next Sunday. For Amorim, it will be another opportunity to demand consistency and build on the resilience his team displayed at Anfield.
