Rúben Amorim has publicly backed
Rasmus Højlund after the striker faced fresh criticism following
Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge — their 18th Premier League defeat of the season.
Despite a largely quiet performance, Højlund retained Amorim’s trust and started the match as United’s lone forward.
The Danish striker failed to register a shot on target and was often isolated in attack, struggling to influence proceedings. However, Amorim was quick to deflect blame from the 22-year-old.
“I’m happy with Højlund,” Amorim
said post-match. “It’s not just about scoring goals — he works hard, follows the tactical plan, and always gives everything.”
Højlund has scored just 7 Premier League goals this season and has come under pressure from fans and pundits who believe United lack a natural goal threat.
But Amorim sees the striker as a long-term project and believes his qualities are not fully captured by statistics alone.
“People look at goals, I look at contribution,” Amorim added. “He’s still learning. We have to help him grow.”
The manager’s backing comes at a critical time. With the Europa League final against Tottenham on the horizon, Amorim is expected to stick with Højlund up front, possibly alongside Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo in attack. United's attacking options remain limited due to injuries and underperformance elsewhere in the squad.
Højlund’s work rate and tactical discipline — particularly in pressing and holding the ball — have been cited as key reasons for his continued inclusion. Still, United will need more end product from their No. 9 if they hope to salvage the season with a European trophy.
Amorim’s public vote of confidence could also be a signal to the club’s board that he believes Højlund should be given more time, not replaced in the summer overhaul — though United are still actively scouting additional forwards.
With one goal in his last 12 games, Højlund will be desperate to repay his manager’s faith when it matters most — under the lights in Bilbao.
