Ruben Amorim believes that
Manchester United’s past transfer mistakes are hampering his ability to do business in the January window,
He is now awaiting the arrival of
Patrick Dorgu as his first signing. United are close to finalizing a deal for the 20-year-old Lecce left wing-back, but with just five days remaining before the transfer deadline, the club has faced significant challenges.
Financial concerns and the need to reinforce Amorim's squad have created a delicate balancing act, with United mindful of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations after posting losses exceeding £300 million over the past three years.
The 40-year-old head coach has inherited a misfiring squad that does not naturally fit his 3-4-2-1 system, making reinforcements crucial.
However, with limited funds, United are actively looking to offload players before the deadline.
Potential Departures Before Deadline Day
Several high-profile names could still leave, including Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro, and Marcus Rashford. Meanwhile, Antony has already departed on loan to Real Betis.
Additionally, Chelsea and Napoli remain interested in Alejandro Garnacho, with United reluctant sellers—but a significant bid could force their hand.
Offloading key players would free up funds for further signings, with Amorim still keen on adding a forward on loan.
United's current struggles are a result of past recruitment failures, with the club having spent over £600 million in the last three summers—a decade-long trend of inconsistent
transfers that has left the squad in disarray.
Amorim: "We Must Avoid Past Mistakes"
Addressing the club’s difficult window, Amorim stressed the importance of learning from past errors and making careful decisions.
"This window is always really difficult, and we don’t want to make the mistakes of the past," Amorim said.
"We have to understand the situation of the club. A lot of things are changing, so we must be careful in this window. You all know the club's current financial situation—it’s not easy."
Europa League Takes on Greater Importance
United’s Premier League struggles—where they currently sit 12th—have increased the significance of their Europa League campaign.
A win against FCSB in Bucharest on Thursday would secure a top-eight finish in the competition, allowing United to bypass the February play-off round and gain valuable extra training time at Carrington.
"Winning is always important," Amorim stated. "Avoiding the play-off round would be massive for us—it would give us two weeks without a midweek game, which is crucial at this stage."
Beyond qualification, Amorim emphasized that every game remains a chance to evaluate his squad and fine-tune performances.
"We need to improve our performances, assess how players fit into each position, and use every game and training session to build for the future."
With time running out in the January transfer window, Amorim remains focused on maximizing resources, strengthening his squad, and steering United toward European success.
