Wayne Rooney has weighed in on
Marcus Rashford’s ongoing exile, revealing he spotted the forward training alone at Carrington last Sunday while his teammates traveled for their 1-0 win over Fulham.
Rooney, who was at the training ground for his children’s match, described the moment as "embarrassing", as uncertainty over Rashford’s future at
Manchester United continues to grow.
Rashford has now missed 11 consecutive games under Ruben Amorim, with his last appearance dating back to December 12 in a 2-1 victory over Viktoria Plzen.
Amorim has repeatedly cited poor training standards as the reason for Rashford’s absence, and the forward has once again been left out of the squad for Thursday's Europa League clash against FCSB.
Rooney: "He Needs to Leave the Club"
Speaking on Stick to Football, Rooney gave insight into Rashford’s routine when his teammates are away, revealing how he trained alone with a fitness coach at Carrington.
"I went into Carrington on Sunday to take my kids to game day, and
Marcus Rashford was out on the training pitch with the fitness coach," Rooney said.
"But he was right over towards where the parents were walking past for the kids' games. I looked at him, thinking how embarrassing it must be for him as parents walk past."
The United legend admitted he once believed Rashford’s struggles were temporary, but now sees leaving the club as the only solution.
"I was surprised when his training issues first started over two years ago, but now I’m not," he said.
"I've spoken to Marcus a couple of times, and I've given him my thoughts—he needs to leave the football club.
"Whatever is going on in his life and at Manchester United, he's not the same. For him to have a fresh start, he needs to leave the club."
Roy Keane: "He Must Be Ashamed"
Roy Keane, known for his blunt analysis, did not hold back when discussing Rashford’s downfall.
"I can't get involved in this conversation—I still can't understand a player who doesn't train properly," Keane said.
"Especially if he wants to move, that’s even more of a reason to train properly.
"So when you go to a new club, you're up to speed, and when you leave, at least you showed a decent attitude. He must be ashamed."
Ian Wright: "This Shouldn’t Be Happening"
Even Ian Wright, who has been one of Rashford’s most vocal supporters, expressed frustration over the situation.
"The whole situation with Marcus Rashford is sad – how it started for him and now where we are.
"If your manager questions your work ethic and training… even if you want to leave, surely there are people watching how you're performing.
"Going into training and working is down to you as a professional, whether you're at United or elsewhere. That’s on Marcus. If that’s happening, it’s sad to hear."
Clock Ticking on Rashford’s Future
With just five days remaining in the January transfer window, Rashford faces a race against time to secure an exit before the February 3 deadline.
Amorim has insisted he wants to use Rashford, but has made it clear that setting high standards remains his top priority as he attempts to guide United out of their struggles.
