Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has admitted it feels “strange” that his position is secure even if his team loses Wednesday’s Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.
He says it highlights the unique long-term vision being backed by the club’s leadership.
Speaking ahead of the high-stakes clash in Bilbao, Amorim addressed questions about pressure and expectations, particularly when compared to his opposite number Ange Postecoglou, who faces growing scrutiny at Spurs despite a stronger domestic campaign.
“It is a bit strange that my job is safe if we lose. But that’s what has been communicated to me,” Amorim said. “I understand the context — the injuries, the transition, and the plans that are already in place for the future.”
United’s 2024/25 league campaign was among the club’s worst in modern history, with the team finishing outside the top ten and falling far short of expectations.
However, their unexpected surge to the Europa League final — and the structural changes under INEOS — have shifted the focus toward long-term stability.
“Of course, I want to win. We need to win. But it’s not about one game,” Amorim added. “It’s about building something over time. The fans deserve more, and we’re going to give them that.”
The club has already begun reshaping the squad with the anticipated signing of Matheus Cunha and ongoing talks for Bryan Mbeumo and Viktor Gyökeres, showing faith in Amorim’s vision and recruitment strategy.
Insiders suggest co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and director Jason Wilcox are keen to avoid another managerial cycle of short-termism.
Instead, they are backing Amorim with a minimum two-season plan, regardless of the outcome in Bilbao.
By contrast, reports suggest Postecoglou could face internal pressure if Spurs fail to lift the trophy — despite guiding them to a top-four Premier League finish.
“Football changes fast. I know that. But I feel supported here. And I’m just focused on giving everything in the final,” Amorim concluded.
Wednesday’s match could still prove pivotal — not just for European qualification, but for the belief around the project Amorim has been tasked with leading.
