Manchester United are reportedly preparing to launch a late move for Sporting striker
Viktor Gyökeres, attempting to hijack Arsenal’s well-advanced pursuit of the Swedish goal machine.
United have rekindled interest in the 26-year-old forward following his remarkable season in Portugal, where Gyökeres has scored 36 goals and provided 14 assists across all competitions.
His all-action style, physical presence, and prolific finishing have placed him firmly among the top centre-forwards in Europe.
Arsenal have been long-time admirers and were thought to be leading the race, with reports suggesting they had already opened talks with Sporting over a deal expected to exceed £67 million — the player’s release clause.
However, United are now monitoring the situation closely, with sources claiming they are ready to enter the bidding war if they win the Europa League final and secure Champions League football.
“United are watching developments very closely — they see Gyökeres as the perfect upgrade to their frontline,” a source close to the deal told
Football365.
Rúben Amorim, who previously managed Gyökeres at Sporting, is said to be a major advocate for the signing.
The Portuguese coach believes the Swedish striker’s physicality and relentless work ethic make him an ideal fit for his 3-4-3 system at Old Trafford — especially with the club looking to offload Anthony Martial and reduce the pressure on Rasmus Højlund.
Gyökeres, who previously played for Coventry City and Brighton, has massively elevated his stock since moving to Lisbon in 2023. He is now regarded as one of the most complete forwards outside Europe’s traditional elite leagues.
However, a deal remains complex. Arsenal are still considered favourites, particularly given their Champions League status and more advanced talks. But United’s familiarity with the player — and potential willingness to meet the release clause in full — keeps them firmly in the mix.
“It’s not done yet — the player has options, and United have money to spend,” another insider added.
If United can pull it off, Gyökeres could become a statement signing and a key piece in Amorim’s attacking rebuild.
