Man Utd youth stars have crucially 'hit rhythm' right away with hatful of goals, says Mount

Goals from Manchester United's youth stars have been crucial as they need to hit the "rhythm" right away says Mason Mount.

Shay Lacey led the way for United's youngsters as they played a big role in the 5-0 win over Rosenborg and Mount sees it is important that they find their feet quickly.

Mount did well in midfield alongside new signing Andrey Santos against Rosenborg and he also showed his readiness to give the Academy players support.

He replaced Harry Maguire at half time as captain and showed he was comfortable as a leader.

Lacey was named Man of the Match after opening the scoring, while several other young players caught the eye as Michael Carrick's side cruised to victory.

Speaking after the game, Mount stressed the importance of the experienced players helping the next generation settle into first-team football.

"I think it's important for all of our older players to really be involved in that," Mount said.

"Show them the way, make them feel comfortable on the pitch, off the pitch. So yeah, it's really important."

Despite being only 27 himself, Mount has quickly become one of the dressing room's senior figures and was seen encouraging several academy players throughout the evening, including putting an arm around Lacey after the youngster found the net.

The England international revealed he is simply passing on the support he received when breaking into senior football.

"I had the same when I was younger coming through," he explained. "The older players putting their arm around me and yeah, that kind of experience as you get older, you have, and you learn from and that's obviously to help the younger lads."

Mount also praised the impact the Academy players have made during United's opening pre-season fixtures.

"I think they've been brilliant. I think the first game they came on, obviously in the second half, and I thought they played really well," he said.

"They've got to find the rhythm straight away, and I thought they did with scoring a few goals.

"So as I said before, really pleased for them. I think they're doing really, really well."

The former Chelsea midfielder also reserved special praise for Santos, who he has now partnered in midfield during both of United's pre-season matches.

Mount believes the Brazilian has settled into life at Old Trafford remarkably quickly and expects him to become an important player for the club.

"I think he's really good," Mount said. "He's really good defensively, reads the game, can pick up good positions, wants the ball all the time, looks to play forward, and it's good for me to kind of work off that.

"So yeah, it's been really good to play with him, to understand him a little bit more in training and then obviously in the games."

Mount also highlighted Santos' attitude since arriving at Carrington.

"Helping him grow and feel comfortable, as I said before, in the team. He's obviously a new player, but I think he's integrated really well.

"He's come in and been very, very comfortable from early on, so yeah, he's definitely got more to come, and then we'll keep growing as a team. But yeah, it's a really good moment at the moment."
