JJ Gabriel poised for Man Utd debut as he is named on bench for Rosenborg clash

Manchester United's youth star JJ Gabriel has been named on the bench by Michael Carrick for the preseason clash with Rosenborg.

It is another major step to be included in the 25-man travelling squad for the trip to Trondheim - and could make his unofficial first-team debut if he features against the Norwegian side.

Gabriel was not involved in last week's defeat by Wrexham in Helsinki as he had returned to training less than a week earlier, and United are carefully handling a precocious talent.

It comes after a remarkable breakthrough season at academy level.

Despite being just 14 years old when the campaign began, the highly-rated attacker was named the Under-18 Premier League Player of the Season, underlining why he is regarded as one of the brightest talents to emerge in recent years.

The youngster, who does not celebrate his 16th birthday until October, has been fast-tracked through United's youth ranks and had been tipped to receive opportunities during pre-season following his outstanding performances last term.

Should he take to the field against Rosenborg, Gabriel would reach another major milestone.

United's squad for the trip to Norway includes a blend of experienced first-team players and exciting youngsters as preparations for the new campaign continue.

Tom Heaton, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro, Mason Mount, Joshua Zirkzee, Patrick Dorgu, Bryan Mbeumo and new signing Andrey Santos are all part of the travelling party, while academy prospects including Chido Obi, Shea Lacey, Harry Amass, Jack Fletcher and Tyler Fletcher have also been given another opportunity to impress.

There are, however, several notable absentees. New striker Benjamin Sesko, defender Matthijs de Ligt and goalkeeper Karl Darlow have all been ruled out through injury, while Ethan Wheatley drops out of the squad following last week's 1-0 defeat to Wrexham in Finland.

There is also no place yet for summer signing Tynan Thompson. The 18-year-old winger recently completed his move from Tottenham in a deal worth up to £8 million but will have to wait for a potential first appearance in United colours.

Gabriel's inclusion is likely to attract the most attention. The teenager has already built a reputation as one of English football's elite prospects, with his pace, close control and eye for goal earning widespread praise throughout the academy system.
