Manchester United are eyeing a summer move for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ forward Matheus Cunha.
The 25-year-old Brazilian, carrying a £62.5m release clause in his Wolves contract, is expected to leave Molineux at the season’s end and Sky Sports sources say he is keen on a move to
United.Multiple club sources informed BBC Sport that Cunha is among several attacking targets on United’s radar, alongside Ipswich Town’s 22-year-old striker
Liam Delap.
Under head coach Ruben Amorim, improving United’s goal-scoring is a priority. The team has managed only 38 goals in 33 Premier League matches this season, a tally better than just Southampton, Leicester City, Ipswich, Everton, and West Ham.
Cunha, who has netted 16 goals across all competitions as Wolves’ top scorer, is seen as an ideal fit for one of the two attacking midfield roles in Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation.
His experience in a similar system under Wolves’ manager Vitor Pereira strengthens his case.
Cunha’s 32 goals in 87 appearances for Wolves highlight his potency, but his disciplinary issues—two red cards and six games missed through suspension this season—may concern potential suitors.
United will also face stiff competition, with Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Newcastle all seeking a forward this summer. In a March interview with the Observer, Cunha expressed his desire to “take the next step” and compete for titles, signaling his ambition.
United’s transfer strategy is complicated by financial uncertainties. Winning the Europa League and securing Champions League qualification could inject £100m into the club’s budget.
However, their current 14th-place standing risks a £24m revenue drop compared to last season’s eighth-place finish, with each Premier League position worth £3m.
Following a recent home defeat to Wolves, Amorim emphasized that squad improvements are part of a broader “plan” but indicated significant changes would wait until the summer.
Cunha’s potential transfer reflects United’s ambition to address their attacking woes, but competition, his disciplinary record, and the club’s financial constraints will shape the outcome.
As the summer window approaches, Cunha remains a key target for a United side eager to climb the Premier League table.
