Manchester United’s pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo has entered a critical stage, with rivals Tottenham Hotspur now threatening to hijack the deal.
United have already submitted an improved bid worth over £60 million, with a structured payment package designed to meet Brentford’s valuation.
The 25-year-old Cameroonian forward, who scored 20 goals and notched 8 assists last season, is open to joining United — and has privately indicated a strong desire to play at Old Trafford.
But Spurs’ late intervention could change everything. Tottenham are prepared to match United’s financial offer and have the upper hand when it comes to sporting appeal: Champions League football.
That could prove decisive, as Mbeumo reportedly wants to test himself at the highest level of European competition — a luxury United can't currently offer. But United's big advantage is that Mbeumo is a childhood Reds fan.
“Tottenham believe they can get the deal done quickly, especially with (Spurs) project appealing to attacking players,” a source close to the deal told The Sun.
United, however, remain confident. Manager Rúben Amorim is pushing hard to make Mbeumo one of his key signings this summer.
With Antony, Sancho, and Rashford all potentially leaving, Amorim sees Mbeumo as the ideal wide forward to fit into his high-pressing 3-4-3 system.
United are also leveraging the player’s long-standing admiration for the club. In a resurfaced interview, Mbeumo said his first shirt bore the name of a Manchester United legend, highlighting a boyhood connection that could tilt the emotional balance in their favour.
“Bryan had Manchester United on his back before he was even a professional,” one source told United In Focus. “This move would mean something more.”
Still, with Spurs now on the scene and Brentford playing hardball, this has quickly become one of the Premier League’s most intense transfer stand-offs of the window so far.
A decision is expected within the next 7–10 days. If United fail to land Mbeumo, they may turn their attention back to Viktor Gyökeres or consider re-entering talks for Pedro Gonçalves.
