Manchester United and Barcelona are reportedly set to go head-to-head in the race to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
It follows growing signs that the Argentine World Cup winner could leave Villa Park this summer.
According to The Sun, both European giants have submitted offers for the 32-year-old shot-stopper, who has been a key figure in Villa’s resurgence under Unai Emery.
Martínez has made over 150 appearances for the club and was instrumental in helping Villa secure Champions League qualification for the 2025/26 season.
Despite that success, there are increasing signals that Martínez is open to a new challenge, particularly with his stock at an all-time high. In a recent interview, the keeper cryptically suggested a move could be on the horizon:
“I want to win titles and be at the very top. We’ll see what happens in the summer.”
United’s interest in Martínez is being driven by manager Rúben Amorim, who is reportedly unconvinced by André Onana’s consistency and distribution.
Although Onana was signed from Inter Milan for £47 million last summer, his error-prone debut season has led United to consider alternatives.
Martínez, known for his commanding presence, shot-stopping reflexes, and psychological edge in big games, could offer the kind of leadership and composure Amorim craves.
His experience in both the Premier League and international tournaments — including Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph — makes him an ideal candidate for a rebuilding United side.
Barcelona are also keen, having struggled to replace Marc-André ter Stegen, who has missed large parts of the season with injury.
With financial limitations at Camp Nou, it remains to be seen whether they can outbid United for the Villa keeper’s signature.
Martínez is under contract at Villa until 2027, meaning the club are under no pressure to sell — but they could reportedly be tempted by an offer in the region of £35–40 million.
“Villa won’t stand in his way if the right bid comes in. But they want full value,” a source close to the club told The Sun.
This could be one of the goalkeeping stories of the summer, with United now weighing whether to go all-in on a proven winner — or give Onana one more chance.
