Manchester United have reportedly agreed personal terms with Geovany Quenda, though Sporting Lisbon are demanding £50 million for the highly-rated teenager.
The 17-year-old wonderkid, a versatile right-sided player, was handed his first-team breakthrough at Sporting by United boss Ruben Amorim.
Quenda has since made 37 appearances this season, scoring twice, and is considered one of Europe’s top young talents.
Having joined Sporting’s academy from Benfica in 2019, Quenda is expected to make a big-money move once he turns 18 in April.
Reports in January suggested that a deal was already “assured” for the summer, as Amorim looks to rebuild United’s squad to fit his preferred 3-4-3 system.
Now, journalist Ben Jacobs claims United have stepped up their pursuit. Speaking to talkSPORT, Jacobs revealed that United have already secured a verbal agreement on personal terms with the player.
“The player has agreed verbally to personal terms. He’s waiting to see if the clubs agree on a fee now or wait until the summer.”
United are looking to strike a deal for around €40 million (£33m), but Sporting are holding out for a minimum of €60 million (£50m). Quenda’s release clause is set at a staggering €100 million (£83m), meaning negotiations could still be drawn out.
“If United can complete this deal for under €60m, it would not only be a great signing for now and the future, but also one that Amorim is very familiar with,” Jacobs added.
Amorim has already secured left-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce, and Quenda could be his next major signing as he continues reshaping United’s squad.
But Amorim appears desperately short of options for his 3-4-3 formation with a striker badly needed who is capable of running onto balls. Rashford left in January but no replacement has come in and Rasmus Hojlund has been disappointing.
