Bryan Mbeumo will wear the number 19 shirt after completing his move from Brentford
The Cameroon international, who scored 20 Premier League goals for Brentford last season, joined United today and has been given his preferred squad number.
The shirt number was last worn by Raphaël Varane and previously by players such as Marcus Rashford, Amad Diallo, Danny Welbeck and Dwight Yorke.
Mbeumo has a personal connection to the number 19, having worn it for Brentford and Troyes, as well as regularly for the Cameroon national team.
He also becomes the second Cameroonian outfielder to wear the number for United, following Eric Djemba-Djemba.
The club highlighted his consistent goal-creating ability and noted that fans can expect to see him debut in United colours during the upcoming Premier League Summer Series.
Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton commented on the transfer, noting Mbeumo’s fit for Manchester United under manager Ruben Amorim.
“He has done well at Brentford, but playing for Manchester United is very different," he told the BBC. "He has experience, he is a good finisher, and his versatility is a big positive - he can play as a central striker as well as on the wing...
"That’s why they have gone for Mbeumo, because I think he is someone they feel they can trust in all areas, in possession and out of it, with the work-rate and energy - and goals too.”
Additionally, a source who dealt with Mbeumo described him as a “terrific guy and a proper professional,” highlighting his character, which could resonate with Eto'o’s likely emphasis on professionalism and national pride.
Mbeumo said he was excited at the chance to play for United. “As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up," he said.
