Bryan Mbeumo has completed a major transfer from Brentford to Manchester United in a deal worth up to £71 million, making him one of the most expensive signings of the summer.
The agreed package includes a guaranteed £65 million paid in four instalments, with a further £6 million in achievable add-ons, mostly tied to appearances and goals in the Premier League.
Mbeumo has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with United holding an option to extend for an additional year.
Mbeumo, 25, was a key figure for Brentford last season, scoring 20 Premier League goals—the fourth-highest in the league—and providing eight assists.
Since Brentford’s promotion, he has averaged 18 goal contributions per season and leaves the club with 70 goals and 51 assists in 242 appearances, ranking among the Bees’ all-time greats.
His departure marks a club-record sale for Brentford, who signed him for just £4 million from Troyes in 2019.
The Cameroon international revealed he was a boyhood Manchester United fan and described the move as a “dream” fulfilled.
“As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up,” Mbeumo said, reported Sky Sports.
He emphasized his desire to improve under new manager Ruben Amorim and compete for trophies with United’s “world-class players”.
United had been tracking Mbeumo for some time and view him as an ideal fit for Amorim’s system.
The club had previously seen a £55 million plus £7.5 million add-ons bid rejected, and faced competition from Tottenham and Newcastle, but Mbeumo consistently preferred a move to Old Trafford.
His arrival follows the £62.5 million signing of Matheus Cunha, taking United’s summer spending on attackers past £120 million.
Statistically, Mbeumo was one of the Premier League’s standout performers last season: only three players scored more goals, and he created more expected assists than any other player, largely due to his league-high 202 crosses
He also ranked among the top players for distance covered and sprints attempted, showcasing his work rate and pace—he recorded the fourth-fastest speed in the league at 36.63 km/h.
His 27 goal contributions directly earned Brentford 22 points, accounting for 40% of their season total.
Brentford director of football Phil Giles thanked Mbeumo for his contributions and acknowledged it was the right time for him to take the next step in his career.
United’s focus now turns to further reinforcing their squad, with interest in strikers such as Ollie Watkins, Viktor Gyokeres, Nicolas Jackson, and Benjamin Sesko, while several current players have been given extra time off to explore potential exits.
Mbeumo is expected to join United’s pre-season tour in the United States as the club aims to rebuild under Amorim and challenge for major honors
