Peter Schmeichel says why it was a mistake to sack Ruben Amorim now and claims Jason Wilcox was thinking more about his ego.
Amorim was dismissed on Monday after rumours that he had a falling out with sporting director Jason Wilcox the Friday before following a poor draw at home to Wolves.
United invested heavily into the project under Amorim but his system with three at the back was heavily criticised and didn't bring the best out of the players that he had at his disposal.
And now they appear to be back at square one as they look for a new manager or an interim option until the end of the season.
"It was wrong to sack Ruben Amorim at this point when you don't have another plan. I was really surprised, I hadn't seen that coming, I can't make sense of it, I still can't make sense of why," said Schmeichel.
"When you speak to people from within, they say it was about time we did that, we've been unhappy but why pick that moment? That moment doesn't make sense to me, why now? Why not back in October for instance.
"If Jason Wilcox feels he was insulted by whatever happened in that meeting then it's not his ego that determines who the manager is, they can still say 'that's not great, it's difficult to work with this guy'.
"Whatever they are thinking, but pick your time and why put the club back again, because whatever they do now it is always going to put them back."
And Schmeichel says that whoever they choose now needs to fit in with the vision the club has for the future.
"It is the wrong decision to sack Ruben Amorim at this point when you don't have another plan that is what I think, I can't make sense of it," said Schmeichel.
"Now they've done it, so what I really want them to do now is to take, a long, long deep breath, start to think about what Manchester United is supposed to be. So give the whole plan an identity, this is what we want to be, this is what we want to look like, this is how we want to play and so when you've got that, then you go out and look at the market and think what person out there can deliver that for us."
