Gary Neville appears to have endorsed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the role of interim manager role at Manchester United saying "it went well last time".
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has spoken to United bosses about a return to Old Trafford until the end of the season but the club are also speaking to other candidates like Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher is also believed to be in the running.
Solskjaer had mixed success last time as United manager having arrived in 2018 to replace Jose Mourinho and he did steer the club to a second place finish in the league in the 2020-21 campaign.
But they didn't progress from there and he was replaced by Erik ten Hag a year later.
And now Neville suggested that Solskjaer would be a good option to return.
"I think they need to bring in someone who has done it before, I think they can’t just imagine this will go well. I was put in a football club for four months and told to steer the ship to shore for the rest of the season and it doesn’t quite work like that," said Neville, referring to disappointing time at Valencia CF.
"Manchester United had a very challenging experience like that with Ralf Rangnick, it went well last time when they put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in... all I would say is that basically if someone has done it before, got a bit of experience, can handle the media, can handle if results maybe don’t go there way...."
But when pushed on whether he would back Solskjaer, Neville did not want to state that, saying that other candidates like Michael Carrick, Ruud van Nistelrooy were "fantastic people"
He said: “The other names that have been mentioned – Michael Carrick, Ruud van Nistelrooy – these are really fantastic people.
“I trained with those guys for a lot of years. They love the club intensely, they get the club, but still they are going to come under a lot of pressure in this next four or five months if results don’t go their way and they are going to have to be ready for that.
“Whoever is going to get it out of those three who are being mentioned, I wish them all the best because it is a tough role.”
He also admitted that Solskjaer returning to United would be like Groundhog Day.
“They put Ryan (Giggs) in charge 10 years ago, then Ole came in charge and you go back to the old boys, then you go for a new one, then you go for a more experienced (one),” Neville said on Sky Sports.
“It is almost like a cycle, like a movie we have all seen before and Groundhog Day. What I do think is Ole is someone who absolutely loves the club, he knows the job, he has been in the job.
