Andre Onana is committed to remaining at Manchester United next season, despite struggling for form in recent months.
United boss Ruben Amorim is reportedly keen to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, but Onana, 28, considers Old Trafford the only place he wants to be.
The Cameroonian shot-stopper, who has made 86 appearances for the club, is under contract until 2028, yet his recent errors have led to speculation about his future.
United are expected to bring in a new goalkeeper ahead of Amorim’s first full season, with Tom Heaton likely to retire when his contract expires in June. Altay Bayindir, currently the club’s No.2, may also seek a move to secure more playing time before the 2026 World Cup.

Onana’s Struggles Raise Questions About His Role

Onana has made three errors leading to goals in the Premier League this season—against Nottingham Forest, Wolves, and Brighton—and was criticized for both goals conceded in last week’s FA Cup defeat to Ipswich Town.
Statistically, he ranks 16th out of 22 Premier League goalkeepers for save percentage, a concerning figure given United’s defensive struggles. While he made crucial saves against Fulham in the FA Cup fifth round, his slow restarts frustrated fans.
United signed Onana from Inter Milan for £47.2 million in July 2023, reuniting him with Erik ten Hag. However, under Premier League profitability and sustainability rules, United would need to recoup at least £28.32 million if they were to sell him, to avoid recording a financial loss.
He now has decided to continue at the club, according to the Manchester Evening News. Interestingly, United haven’t outright sold a No.1 goalkeeper since Alex Stepney left the club in 1978.

Amorim Backs Onana Despite Criticism

Despite speculation, Amorim has publicly defended Onana, insisting the scrutiny on him is unfair.
“He made some great saves that kept us in the game, and while he has had some issues, that is normal,” Amorim said.
“We are not performing well as a team, and when that happens, individual players struggle too. The second goal against Ipswich? He was waiting for Delap’s touch—it was clear—and the ball just went through. These things happen.”
Amorim has urged support for Onana, emphasizing the need to focus on the future rather than past mistakes.
With the Africa Cup of Nations set for December 2025, potentially ruling Onana out during a crucial period of the season, United must decide whether to stick with their current No.1 or seek an upgrade.
