Ruben Amorim has singled out two
Manchester United youngsters for praise amid a difficult spell for the club.
Manchester United have lost their last two games in all competitions and won just one of their last five matches in the Premier League under
Amorim.
They were beaten 2-1 at home by Arsenal in the league last time out before losing by the same scoreline against Leicester City in the EFL Cup quarter-final on Wednesday night.
It leaves Amorim with just 10 wins from his 27 games in charge of United across all competitions but amid the gloom, he sees some light from the club’s academy.
Speaking after the defeat to Leicester, Amorim praised youngsters Harry Amass and Ethan Wheatley.
Amass, 17, came off the bench against Leicester for his senior debut while Wheatley, 19, earned his fifth senior appearance for the club.
‘I was pleased with some details – the way we conceded the goals we cannot do anything about that,’ Amorim told MUTV after the Leicester defeat.
‘But in some moments, especially with the young kids, I think they feel the pressure and they still tried to do what we are asking and that’s a good sign.
‘Harry Amass and Ethan Wheatley are knocking on the door and they will have more chances.’
Left-back Amass joined United from Watford in 2023 and has been a regular for the club’s under-18 side while also featuring for the under-21s.
He played the final half-hour against Leicester and did not look overawed despite the occasion and the fact United were losing at the time he came on.
Wheatley, a striker, made his debut last season against Sheffield United but is yet to score his first senior goal for the club.
Amorim clearly rates both players highly and sees a bright future for them at Old Trafford.
Manchester United fans will be hoping that continues to be the case despite the team’s struggles under Amorim so far, with supporters dreaming of a return to the days when homegrown players like Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs dominated the first-team.
United’s next game is against Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
