Paul Scholes has asked if Manchester United don't have players in the Academy who are as good as high-priced signings who have failed to deliver.
Over recent years United have seen a conveyor belt of expensive footballers arrive who have failed to make a big impact and the club has not been able to progress.
Plenty of questions have been put at the door of the club owners and the recruitment as at the same time many players have left and gone on to be successful elsewhere.
There is no better case than Scott McTominay who was sold by United and has gone on to be named the best player in Serie A last season after joining Napoli.
But there are also many other examples including Real Madrid fullback Alvaro Carreras who was never even given a chance in the United first team. He was a youth product who was loaned out and then sold to Benfica before catching the eye of Madrid.
Now Scholes, referring to comments from Sir Jim Ratcliffe over the Academy not delivery, said: "Man Utd have paid a lot of money for players who aren't good enough.
"You'd think, if they're paying £30, £40 million for an average player, and this might be where he's saying the Academy is failing. Have we not got somebody in the academy who's just as good as that?"
Speaking on The Good, the Bad and the Football, Nicky Butt continued: "They just sold three of the academy products that are now shining at other clubs - Rashford, McTominay and Gomez, he's flying.
"Gomez is absolutely flying at Marseille. And hindsight is easy, it's easy for two old Man United players who came through the academy to sit here and go, that's rubbish, that's not great.
"But I'm telling you now, I don't care what anybody says, I don't care if I get slagged off for saying it, Man United are like Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, they're institutions and not just football clubs.
"And unless you have people that know what it takes to get from there to there, and Darren (Fletcher) is one, so they've got one here with Darren, but they need more than one.
"I don't care who it is, I don't care who comes into the football club but unless you've got people that know how to get from one extreme, to know what it takes, you're pissing in the wind."
