Jadon Sancho has revealed that a conversation with Marcus Rashford played a decisive role in his deadline-day loan move from Manchester United to Aston Villa.
The winger, who has endured a turbulent spell at Old Trafford with limited opportunities, will spend the 2025/26 campaign at Villa Park, where the Midlands club will cover the majority of his wages.
Speaking after the move, Sancho explained that it was Rashford’s positive testimony from his own brief spell at Villa that convinced him to take the plunge.
“I spoke to him while he was here last season, and I know he really enjoyed it,” Sancho said. “He said so many lovely things about the club, like how it’s a family and you feel that friendly environment with great players and staff. I definitely felt that as I came in.”
While Rashford’s endorsement was vital, Sancho also pointed to the role of Villa boss Unai Emery in persuading him.
The Spanish manager is reported to have shown the England international a clear tactical plan for the season, assuring him of his importance in the squad.
“First of all, when I spoke to the manager, he gave me belief and confidence,” Sancho continued, reported FourFourTwo. “He showed me the plan for this year, and it really inspired me.
"He definitely persuaded me, and I can’t wait to work under him. Wherever the manager needs me, I’ll be happy to play. I have individual goals, of course, but my main priority is the team.”
The move marks Sancho’s third loan spell in quick succession, following stints at Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund. But with Villa competing in both the Premier League and Europe, the 25-year-old has a significant platform to revive his career.
For Sancho, Rashford’s words carried weight, but Emery’s trust may prove decisive. The challenge now is to rediscover his best form and justify the faith placed in him.
