Roy Keane is "astute" who "comes alive on matchdays" in the mould of Alex Ferguson and would be perfect for Manchester United, says Nicky Butt.
United have never been able to reach the heights that Fergie set for United since he retired in 2013 and now Butt feels that his former captain Keane would be ideal.
It was another frustrating night for United fans on Monday where again the team failed to deliver even against the 10-men of Everton at home - which marked a year that Ruben Amorim has been in charge.
"What I can never get my head around is why Roy Keane never got the job at Man Utd and he's a mate so it's a bit biased but if you look at his personality, his playing career and his character and what he has done in his managerial career, he was unbelievable at Sunderland," said Butt.
"You look at all the trouble they have had, and he still lives locally, I for the life of me cannot fathom why nobody sat down with him and found out whether he would be interested in the job.
"I just think if, when it's been going badly, if you've got Roy in, and Roy's a very astute person, he's clever bloke, he'd then go and get a really good coach into do the stuff that he might think he is not the best at, because I think Roy is very much a Sir Alex Ferguson manager.
"He's a manager, he manages people. he comes alive on matchdays, he tells people what to do, he looks at it, he'd go and get some.
"Whatever are his flaws, he is not too big, he would be like I need this and that, he wouldn't think I can do everything. I can't for the life of me think why the powers that be at the football club would not have spoken to him."
Butt knows Keane well from their playing days together at United and doesn't think that the way he left under a cloud after falling out with Ferguson would now stand in his way with the current board.
"I'd get that if people were still in charge but that's all changed, that dynamics all changed so there's new people at the top," Butt told The Good, the Bad and the Football. He added that it is "bizarre how they are looking all over the world" for managers and might have the answer at home.
